Waste Management Consulting Programs

The presence and operation of a robust Waste Management Program is the best method for cost reduction and is your best defense against violations or fines. A rigorous review of your plan will direct resources and time to the areas that need the most attention. Putting a well-developed Waste Management Plan into practice can produce many benefits.

Waste Management Program Development

A thorough review of your facility’s operations will identify all waste generating processes. The regulatory status of the wastes can then be determined. Appropriate disposal methods, shipping requirements, personnel training and documentation can then be implemented.

Waste Characterization and Packaging

Making accurate determination of the physical and chemical characteristics of the wastes is critical for proper packaging and disposal. Proper Packaging of the waste prior to shipment is very important for the safety of your in-transit waste and is a significant compliance issue.

Identification of Requirements for Each Waste

When your wastes are and classified, you then must determine the regulatory framework in which you will manage the waste. The handling of spent fluorescent lamps under the Universal Waste Standards, the handling of spent motor oil under the Used Oil Standards and the handling of oil-based paint under the RCRA Standards are examples. Once the applicable standard has been identified, the specific requirements for the handling of the wastes can be determined.

On-Site Waste Management

EPA allows generators to treat certain kinds of hazardous wastes without a permit for the purpose of rendering the wastes less hazardous. This can greatly reduce the disposal and transportation cost for applicable waste streams.

Remediation Management

Oversight of spill cleanup activities can be provided to ensure compliance, safety, completeness and efficiency.

Radioactive Waste Characterization and Shipping

The isotopic content of radioactive or mixed wastes are used to properly classify the waste according to NRC guidelines. The DOT status of radioactive waste/material is calculated to determine the packaging, labeling and shipping documentation requirements for containers being shipped by ground or by air.

Documentation

A thoroughly documented waste management program will cover several regulatory requirements and will provide background on the methods and procedures you have chosen to implement. Essential documentation includes Training, Waste Manifests, Waste Generating Records, Analytical Testing Records, etc. Supplementary documentation includes SOP’s, Waste Profiles, Emergency Procedures, etc. Being able to present these documents to a regulatory inspector will show them that you have a well-developed plan and that you know what your responsibilities are.
