Material Classification

Packing Group

The packing group of the material determines the type of packaging which is required. The greater the degree of hazard, the more stringent are the packing requirements. Close examination of the characteristics of your material will allow proper selection of the packing group for your material.

Material Packaging

One of the primary factors in the packaging of your material is the quantity of material being shipped. Your package may qualify for reduced requirements as an Excepted Quantity or a Limited Quantity shipment. Selection of packaging of the proper integrity is one of the most important aspects of the safety of your shipment.

Marking and Labeling

Communicating the hazard of a shipment to transport workers is accomplished by the markings and labellings on the packages. The specifications and placement of these is very specific they are the first thing an inspector will see when your package is handled.

Commercial Invoices

For international shipments, the Commercial Invoice is the primary document for getting your package through customs and across the borders.

Shipping Documents

The level of documentation depends upon the type of shipment, but a fully regulated package will require a completed "Shipper’s Declaration of Dangerous Goods" and an "Air Waybill". This will also include a 24-hour Emergency Response Phone Number for the shipment.
